Why Weather Matters More Than You Think | Open Air Adventure Flights

Why We Sometimes Have to Reschedule Your Vintage Flight?

If you've booked a flight with us, you've probably heard us say, "We're keeping an eye on the weather."

While we know it can be disappointing to postpone a flight you've been looking forward to, there's a very good reason why we're so weather dependent.

At Open Air Adventure Flights, safety will always come first. More importantly, we want you to experience Winnie, our beautifully restored 1941 Boeing Stearman, on a day when you can truly enjoy everything that makes open-cockpit flying so magical.

Flying an Open-Cockpit Biplane Is Different

Unlike flying in a modern enclosed aircraft, a Boeing Stearman is a completely open-cockpit experience.

You'll feel the wind, smell the fresh country air, hear the unmistakable roar of the Pratt & Whitney radial engine, and enjoy uninterrupted views across the South West.

That's exactly what makes the experience unforgettable.

But it also means the weather becomes part of the flight.

Wind Makes a Big Difference

Wind is one of the biggest factors we consider before every flight.

Many people don't realise that Bunbury Airport has a single runway, which means we can't simply take off or land in another direction if the wind changes. When there is a strong crosswind, where the wind blows across the runway rather than along it, it can make take-offs and landings more challenging.

While the Boeing Stearman is a capable aircraft, our priority is always safety and giving you the best possible experience. If the wind is too strong or too gusty, we'll simply wait for a better day.

It might mean postponing your adventure, but we'd much rather fly in beautiful conditions than rush a flight that isn't enjoyable.

Rain and Open Cockpits Don't Mix

This one might seem obvious once you think about it, but it's something many people don't consider when they book.

Unlike a modern aircraft, the Boeing Stearman has no roof, no windscreen around the cockpit and no doors. Once you're strapped in wearing your leather helmet and goggles, you're completely immersed in the outdoors.

Flying through rain would mean getting wet from the moment we leave the ground, and at flying speeds even light rain can feel surprisingly uncomfortable.

That's why we'll always wait for dry conditions. We want you to remember the feeling of the wind in your face, the warmth of the sun, and the incredible views, not spending your bucket-list flight wishing you'd brought an umbrella!

Low Cloud Can Affect Visibility

One of the highlights of our flights is the incredible scenery around Bunbury and the South West.

From the turquoise waters of Geographe Bay to the winding Collie River and Bunbury's beautiful coastline, there's plenty to take in.

Low cloud or poor visibility can hide these spectacular views and reduce the overall experience.

After all, we don't just want to take you flying, we want you to experience some of the most beautiful views Western Australia has to offer.

We Want You to Experience the Golden Age of Aviation

Imagine climbing into Winnie wearing your leather flying helmet and goggles.

The radial engine starts with its unmistakable rumble.

You taxi onto the runway.

Moments later, you're climbing into a crisp blue sky with the wind in your face and the South West stretched out below you.

That's the experience we want every passenger to have.

If the weather isn't right, we'd rather wait than compromise on what should be one of the best adventures of your life.

Winter Can Be Challenging

Winter in Western Australia often brings periods of rain, strong winds and low cloud.

While there are still plenty of beautiful flying days, they can be harder to predict than during spring and summer.

That's why we usually confirm bookings closer to the day, when the forecast becomes more reliable.

We know waiting can be frustrating, but it gives us the best chance of finding the perfect conditions for your flight.

The Best Flying Days

Some of our favourite flying days begin with calm morning air, crystal-clear skies and sunshine sparkling across Geographe Bay.

Those are the mornings Winnie was made for.

The take-off feels effortless. The air is smooth. The views stretch for miles, and every photograph captures the beauty of the South West.

They're the flights where passengers climb out of the cockpit with huge smiles, already talking about when they can come back.

Those are the conditions we strive to give every guest.

Safety Always Comes First

Our vintage Boeing Stearman has been meticulously restored and maintained to the highest standards.

Likewise, every flight is carefully planned with weather conditions in mind.

As Pilot in Command, Johan has the final decision on whether conditions are suitable to fly.

Sometimes that means making the difficult decision to postpone a flight.

It's never because we don't want to fly, quite the opposite.

We love seeing Winnie in the sky just as much as our passengers do, and waiting for the right conditions ensures every flight is as safe, comfortable and memorable as it should be.

Thank You for Your Patience

If your flight has been rescheduled because of the weather, thank you for your understanding.

We know you've been looking forward to your adventure, and we promise we're just as eager to get Winnie back into the sky.

When the perfect flying day arrives, you'll understand exactly why we waited.

Because some experiences simply shouldn't be rushed.
