The Most Common Questions About Flying with Open Air Adventure Flights

The Most Common Questions We Get Asked

If you're thinking about booking a flight with Open Air Adventure Flights, you're probably wondering what to expect.

Flying in a beautifully restored 1941 Boeing Stearman is unlike stepping aboard a commercial aircraft. It's open cockpit, full of history, and an experience that most people have never had before.

Here are some of the questions we're asked most often.

What is it like flying in an open cockpit?

Imagine the wind in your face, the unmistakable sound of a Pratt & Whitney radial engine, and incredible views with nothing but fresh air around you.

It's immersive, exciting, and something that's difficult to describe until you've experienced it yourself. Many passengers tell us it feels like stepping back into the golden age of aviation.

Is it safe?

Absolutely.

Safety is our number one priority. Winnie is meticulously maintained, inspected, and operated in accordance with Australian aviation regulations.

Before every flight, Johan completes a thorough pre-flight inspection and provides every passenger with a comprehensive safety briefing before stepping into the aircraft.

Who flies the aircraft?

All flights are piloted by Johan, founder of Open Air Adventure Flights and a passionate vintage aviation enthusiast.

Passengers fly from the front cockpit while Johan flies from the rear cockpit, just as the Boeing Stearman was originally designed.

Where do you fly?

We operate from Bunbury Airport, approximately two hours south of Perth.

Depending on your chosen experience, you'll enjoy spectacular views of Bunbury, Koombana Bay, Back Beach, the Leschenault Estuary, and the stunning South West coastline. Our longer Warbird Sortie experience even takes you as far as the iconic Busselton Jetty.

What should I wear?

Dress comfortably for the weather and wear enclosed shoes.

We provide everything else you'll need, including:

Leather flying helmet
Vintage-style goggles
Classic bomber jacket

These all add to the authentic open cockpit experience.

Can I bring a camera?

Because the aircraft is open cockpit, loose items cannot be carried during flight.

However, cameras that can be securely attached to your wrist or worn around your neck may be permitted at the pilot's discretion.

We also offer professionally filmed video packages, and if you own a GoPro, you're welcome to bring it provided it can be securely mounted to our approved camera mount.

Can friends and family come?

Of course.

Friends and family are welcome to come along and watch your adventure.

There's plenty of parking at the Bunbury Aero Club and Flying School, along with a fantastic viewing deck where they can watch your departure and arrival.

What happens if the weather isn't suitable?

Vintage aviation relies on good weather.

If conditions aren't suitable, we'll simply reschedule your flight for another day. We'd much rather you enjoy Winnie in perfect flying conditions than settle for anything less.

How long are gift vouchers valid?

Gift vouchers are valid for two years, giving plenty of time to choose the perfect day for your adventure.

They also make a fantastic gift for birthdays, anniversaries, Father's Day, Christmas, retirements, or anyone with a love of aviation.

Is this suitable for someone who has never flown in a vintage aircraft?

Absolutely.

In fact, most of our passengers have never experienced open cockpit flying before.

Whether you're ticking off a bucket list, celebrating a special occasion, or simply looking for an unforgettable adventure, we'll guide you through every step of the experience.
