Marlston Hill Lookout – Bunbury From Above

On the weekend, Meisie and I walked along Back Beach, past the lighthouse, and up to the Marlston Hill Lookout. It’s one of my favourite walks in Bunbury — a little workout with a big reward at the top.
Walking or Driving Up
You can reach the lookout either by walking (as we did) or by driving. There are a few parking spots near the base if you’d rather skip the coastal walk. From there, it’s a steady climb, with lots of stairs up to the top platform.
I tied Meisie up at the bottom — she waited patiently, like the good girl she is — while I went up to take in the views.
Views Worth the Climb
The lookout isn’t very tall, but the views are lovely and give you a real sense of Bunbury’s layout. From the top you can see:
-
Jetty Road Harbour and Dolphin Cove
-
Koombana Beach and the inlet
-
The lighthouse standing out against the coastline
-
The length of Back Beach
-
And the town itself stretching inland
It’s the kind of view that makes you pause and really appreciate Bunbury’s mix of beaches, harbour, and bushland.
A Glimpse of Flying
Standing up there, looking out across the whole town, you get just a glimpse of what it’s going to feel like to fly in Winnie, our WWII Stearman, with Open Air Adventure Flights. From the air you’ll see this same coastline — the jetty, the harbour, the lighthouse, the inlet — but on a grander scale, with the wind rushing past you.
That’s why I think Marlston Hill is such a must-do in Bunbury. It gives you the perfect ground-level preview of what’s waiting from above.
Before or After Your Flight
If you’re visiting Bunbury for an adventure flight, this is an easy stop either before or after your flight. It’s close to the city, simple to reach, and won’t take much time — but the views will stay with you.
Why You Should Go
Marlston Hill Lookout may not take long to visit, but it’s one of those small experiences that helps you really connect with a place. For me, it’s a reminder of why I love calling Bunbury home — and for visitors, it’s a must-do on your Bunbury list.
