Bunbury Lighthouse – A Striking Coastal Landmark

Bunbury Lighthouse – A Striking Coastal Landmark

If you’re exploring Bunbury’s coastline, one landmark you’ll spot from a distance is the Bunbury Lighthouse. Standing proudly on Marlston Hill, its distinctive black-and-white checkered pattern makes it instantly recognisable — especially against a blue sky or at sunset.

A View to Enjoy from the Outside

Unlike some lighthouses, Bunbury Lighthouse isn’t open to climb — but it doesn’t need to be. It’s best admired from the outside, watching it appear on the horizon as you move along the coast. It’s especially striking when viewed from Back Beach, where it feels like part of the natural rhythm of the landscape.

Connected to the Back Beach Path

One of the best ways to visit is on foot or by bike. The coastal path along Back Beach connects directly to the lighthouse, so you can start at one end of Ocean Drive and follow the sealed path all the way to Marlston Hill. You’ll enjoy ocean views, rest spots, and the sound of waves the entire way.

For walkers, it’s a gentle, scenic route; for runners or cyclists, it’s a workout with a perfect photo finish.

Perfect Photo Stop

The checkered lighthouse pops beautifully against the skyline and makes a great photography spot. From here, you can see Koombana Bay on one side and the Indian Ocean on the other — a view that’s beautiful year-round, whether it’s sunlit and bright or moody and stormy.

Before or After Your Flight

If you’re visiting for an Open Air Adventure Flight, the lighthouse is only around ten minutes from Bunbury Airport. You’ll spot it from the air during your flight, but walking or riding to it along the coast gives you a completely different perspective.

Pair it with a stroll along Back Beach, a coffee in town, or a picnic by the water for a simple, scenic way to spend part of your day in Bunbury.
