Big Swamp Reserve – Bunbury’s Wetland Walk

Big Swamp Reserve – Bunbury’s Wetland Walk

Today Meisie and I visited Big Swamp Reserve, and it really is a beautiful spot. Just minutes from the city centre, it’s a place where nature, wildlife, and family fun all come together.

Walking the Lake

You can take your dog on a lead around the whole lake, following the path as it loops through trees and reeds with the water always nearby. Meisie loved it — so many new smells and plenty of birds to keep her ears pricked.

Right next to the Bunbury Wildlife Park, there’s also an off-lead dog park, so pups can enjoy some free time after the walk. It makes the reserve a great outing whether your dog is on lead or ready for a run.

Family Fun

For families, the huge playgrounds are a big drawcard. They’re modern, colourful, and spread out with lots of space, so kids can burn energy while parents relax with a coffee or picnic nearby.

It’s the kind of place you can easily spend half a day — part walk, part play, and part nature-spotting.

Birdlife & Nature

One of the highlights for me was the bird viewing deck. It looks out across the wetlands and gives you the perfect vantage point to spot local species. Next time I’ll definitely be back with my binoculars.

The reserve is teeming with birdlife, and the peaceful water makes it a relaxing place to just stop, watch, and listen.

Community Spirit

Big Swamp is also home to Bunbury Parkrun every Saturday morning — a free, timed 5km run that brings the community together. I’m planning to give it a go myself next weekend. It’s a great way to enjoy the reserve while getting in a little fitness.

Why Visit Big Swamp Reserve

If you’re visiting Bunbury, Big Swamp Reserve is a must-do for anyone who loves nature, family time, or simply stretching their legs. With dog-friendly paths, playgrounds, bird-watching, and even Parkrun, it has something for everyone.

It’s also only about ten minutes from Bunbury Airport, so it pairs perfectly with an Open Air Adventure Flight — enjoy the wetlands from the ground, then see how they fit into Bunbury’s landscape from above.
